The government has been working tirelessly to document the economy and to increase the tax base of the country. To get more people to e-file their tax returns, the FBR has issued 134,848 notices to high net-worth individuals all across the country.
The notices were served by the Broadening of Tax Base (BTB) offices located at their respective Regional Tax Offices (RTOs). The BTBs have been specially formed for this purpose and their role is to expand the tax net of the country by bringing more unregistered individuals in the tax net.
The BTB has issued several notices in different cities of the country, the details of which are as follows:
- 37,083 notices were issued to individuals in Lahore.
- 21,248 in Rawalpindi.
- 4,600 in Islamabad.
- 15,800 in Peshawar.
- 15,560 in Sargodha
- 10,467 in Karachi.
- 8,160 in Abbottabad.
- 5,198 in Hyderabad.
- 5,795 in Sukkur.
Individuals from other cities were also issued notices but the compliance record of the served notices has still not been complied. Due to steps like these, the number of tax filers in the country has reached an all-time high which stands at 2.561 million, which is a 69% increase as compared to the previous year.
